Artist Statement

My artwork is an exploration of light through the interaction of material and color. In addition to the hardware cloth and handmade paper I have used previously, I have begun to incorporate other materials like chiffon, tule, coffee filters, and mulberry paper. I have begun incorporating all of these materials together more instead of using them for separate facets of one body of work.

Throughout the process of creating my work, I begin with a reference to sunrises and sunsets and decide how best to capture them, using watercolor to dye everything and letting my emotions influence the color selections. The color is either included in the paper-making process or applied to the materials after they have been sewed together. I have been attempting to achieve more vibrant, saturated colors, to give the vibrancy of the clouds in my reference imagery.

I wish these artworks to draw the viewer into a quiet and contemplative space. I want them to bring their own experiences and feelings to the artwork; consider the color and material shifts, the stitching, and discover patterns in the geometric, gridded base.
